Mark Blyth– “The Function of Democracy (These Days) Is to Stop People Effecting Change.”

Here’s another serving of fascinating insights on the current state of economics and politics in the United States and Europe from the Scottish political scientist Mark Blyth, excerpted from a discussion at the Watson Institute.

  1. Blyth has the most comprehensive “mental databank” and resultant analysis of current geoplolitics that I have ever heard.

The gentleman in black (sorry I don’t see him IDd in the video) touched on, but did not quite get to, a zeitgeist previously very influential but now largely buried in American life: Religion.

The man in black lamented the lack of good emotional “feelings” which used to coalesce us. We were a Christian nation. Multiculturalism and Humanism haven’t (and in my opinion will not) substitute for it.

Without some such, there can be no charity and all of us REGARDLESS OF OUR “FORMAL” POLITICS, will continue to look out only for number one and a few close “others”.
